About Whistlebyte

Whistlebyte is written by Johnny. It answers the first questions of a planted nano tank — substrate, fertilizer, plants — with the manufacturer’s numbers instead of forum guesses.

Who writes here

I’m Johnny. I keep a planted aquarium myself, and I write every guide on this site — the first one cites 9 manufacturer and plant-nursery pages, each with the date it was read. The pictures here are drawings, so they can show exactly the setup a guide talks about.

How the guides are made

  • Each guide starts from a question beginners really ask — the kind that gets ten different answers in one forum thread.
  • It asks for your setup first: tank size, substrate, light and plants. Most of those disagreements come from leaving them out.
  • Doses and amounts come from the manufacturer’s own instructions. Every guide lists its sources and the date they were checked.
  • Where sources disagree, the guide says so and tells you which situation each answer fits.

You can see all of this in the first guide, sand with root tabs or aquasoil: two root tab brands give different replacement intervals, and the page shows both instead of picking one.

What you won’t find here

  • Advice on sick fish, medication or treatments. For that, ask a veterinarian who treats fish or an experienced local fish store.
  • Reviews of gear I haven’t bought and used myself.

Affiliate links

Some links on this site go to shops that pay a commission if you buy something. Those links are marked affiliate. The commission never decides the answer: if the right answer for your tank is that you don’t need to buy anything, that is the answer. More on the affiliate disclosure page.
